High Performance Vertical Machining Center with GE-Fanuc 21i-M conversational control

Romi introduced the completely new D series Vertical Machining Centers in 2002. Designed using the latest software and employing finite element analysis the new D series is the most stable Vertical Machining Center ever built by Romi.

Romi has continued our very successful relationship with GE-Fanuc. The D series has a GE-Fanuc 21i-M CNC control as well as GE-Fanuc high response spindle and servo motors.
As the pioneer of GE-Fanuc/ Romi manual guide conversational software on lathes, we are the company best able to implement the new Manual Guide (i) software used on the D series. While conversational programming is not the best solution for complex molds and dies, it is the best solution for simple parts or short run applications.

Descriptions

Structure: The base, column and headstock are heavy duty Romi castings. They are well ribbed for strength and vibration dampening. Both the column and tables are supported by the monobloc base. The castings are poured in our own foundry to DIN 1691 standards. Our foundry is ISO 9002 certified and has been since 1994. The base casting is designed so that chips will flow away from the work area.

Headstock: The headstock casting is designed to provide minimal deformation under load and ambient thermal variations using finite element analysis. The spindle motor is isolated form the headstock casting using thermal insulation. The motor fan directs exhaust air upward away from the headstock. The headstock casting has a wide stance across the linear guide ways and a long contact area to minimize deflection. The spindle housing part of the headstock casting has an air space around the spindle housing to dissipate heat. An ambient temperature increase of 40 degrees results in a Y axis angular displacement of less than .0018”. The headstock casting is so rigid that there is no need to build in sag or torsion in the casting as many competitors do. Since there is no counterbalance the Z axis thrust is augmented by the weight of the headstock.

Spindle: Romi spindles are assembled in our category 10,000 clean room. Romi uses three angular contact precision ball bearings around the tool taper and a roller bearing at the upper spindle area. The 10,000 RPM spindle uses ceramic ball bearings to minimize heat, provide higher continuous RPM and greater load capacity.

Guide ways: Preloaded linear guide ways are used on all axes. X and Y axes guide ways are protected by sliding steel guards.

Tool changer: The umbrella changer holds 22 tools and uses plastic tool grippers. The grippers are inexpensive, easy to replace and softer than any tool holder to prevent damage and wear to the holders. The grippers reduce the weight in the umbrella allowing you to use heavier tools. Double proximity switches are used to insure positive location of the tool disc.

Ball Screws: Ball screws are manufactured and ground by Romi where complete control over the accuracy and quality is insured. We are not dependent on commercially available products. The double ball nuts are large in width and diameter. The double nut design provides positive location by mating with both flanks of the screw at all times. This design also minimizes heat distortion. Thermal gauging or temperature reduction systems are not required.

Lubrication: Automatic lubrication is standard. The lubrication reservoir is in plain sight and is easy to refill, but it is protected from accidental damage. The reservoir has 1/2 gallon capacity.

Guarding: Romi uses 10 gauge, powder coated steel for all external guarding. The door is easy to open and close gliding on multiple rollers. The double overlapping seal ensures that coolant remains in the cutting area, not on your floor. A large safety window in the door and large side windows allow the operator to monitor machine operations. Steel guards direct chips to the sides of the work area where they are collected in easy to clean chutes. A sealed work light is located in the work area.
